More than 20 cheeses recalled due to Listeria fears

More than 20 cheeses have been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) due to the possible presence of bacteria that can lead to illness. 

The recall is of various brands of cheese produced by Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese, with some products being sold in supermarkets, including Dunnes Stores and Spar. 

The cheese products "are being recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale".

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, according to the FSAI.

"Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly."

The recall relates to all pack sizes, all batch codes and all expiry dates. Consumers are being advised not to eat the implicated cheeses.

The recall follows an earlier notice for three kinds of cheese to be recalled over the same fears.
