A man has been arrested in connection with the assault of two off-duty members of An Garda Síochána in Dublin on Saturday.

Gardaí say the incident occurred at the junction of Dame Street and Euston Street at 1.30am on Saturday morning and led to two off-duty gardaí being injured.

One of the men, who aged in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital where his condition remains critical.

Gardaí are particularly looking to speak with any taxi drivers who were driving in the Dame Street area at the time and may have footage

A second man was taken to St James’s Hospital for medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.

On Sunday morning, a garda spokesperson confirmed to the Irish Examiner that a man, aged in his 30s, had been arrested in Dublin on Saturday evening in connection with the assault.

The man remains in custody at a Garda station in the Dublin Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Investigating gardaí have appealed for witnesses.

Any persons who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Dame Street/Temple Bar area, between 1am and 1.45am, have been asked to make this footage available.

In a post on X, Taoiseach Simon Harris described the incident as "alarming", and said his thoughts are with the two off-duty gardaí.

"My thoughts are with the off duty gardaí who were victims of an alarming and egregious attack in Temple Bar last night, one of who remains in hospital".

Mr Harris also said the "perpetrators of this attack will face the full rigours of the law".
