Woman, 60s, dies in Mayo crash

The victim was a passenger in a car which collided with another vehicle on the N59 road between Newport and Mulranny. 

A woman in her 60s has died following a road traffic accident in Co  Mayo this evening.

The victim was a passenger in a car which collided with another vehicle on the N59 road between Newport and Mulranny.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 4.30pm on Thursday.

The N59, Newport to Mulranny road, is currently closed as garda forensic collision investigators conduct a technical examination of the scene. Diversions are in place.

The remains of the victim have been taken to Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, where an autopsy will be conducted.

The two other occupants of the same vehicle, a man and a woman, are currently receiving medical treatment for serious injuries at Mayo University Hospital.

Four occupants of the second vehicle were also taken to Mayo University Hospital. Their injuries are understood to be non-life threatening.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to the accident or motorists who have dashcam footage.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
