TV licence to be retained but supplemented with exchequer funding

The issue of how to pay for the national broadcaster has been a source of tension at Cabinet level.

The TV licence is to be retained but supplemented with an exchequer fund under a new arrangement being finalised.

Under the new model, the TV licence would remain and public service broadcasting would be buttressed by a multi-annual fund which would not be part of the overall budget process.
