A man and a woman, aged in their 70s, have died following a two-car collision in Co Donegal.

The crash occurred on the N56 at Kilmacrennan at around 11.50pm on Wednesday.

The driver of one of the cars, a man, aged in his 70s, and a female passenger, also aged in her 70s, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The local coroner has been notified, and arrangements will be made for post-mortem examinations.

The driver of the second car, a woman in her 40s, was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed overnight to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

The examination will take place this morning. Local diversions are currently in place.

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milford Garda Station on 074 915 3060, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

The fatal collision means there have now been 107 deaths on Irish roads so far this year. This is up 16 on the year before.

It comes as a male pedestrian died in Dublin after a hit-and-run in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 1am on the coast road in Baldoyle. The car involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene.
