Taoiseach's home targeted for second time by anti-migration protestors
After becoming Taoiseach, Mr Harris asked gardaí to examine if current laws were strong enough “in terms of being able to protect people, and their families in their homes”.
The home of Taoiseach Simon Harris was targeted by a group of anti-immigration protestors last night, for the second time since he took on the role.
A number of the individuals involved were masked and waved Irish flags as they called for mass deportations and the clearing of tented accommodation for immigrants.
They also demanded a closing of Irish borders to immigrants.
On May 2, the Taoiseach’s home was also targeted by protestors at his children’s bedtime – just a week after the home of Justice Minister Helen McEntee’s family was evacuated after her family home was the subject of hoax bomb threat.
After becoming Taoiseach, Mr Harris asked gardaí to examine if current laws were strong enough “in terms of being able to protect people, and their families in their homes”.
Gardai responded to last night’s incident which occurred at around 8pm.
A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí responded after a small number of individuals gathered outside a residence in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, shortly before 8pm on Friday. Gardaí engaged with those present and instructed them to immediately leave the area, which they complied with. We have no further comment to make at this time.”
Concerns have been expressed in recent times about incidents targeting politicians.
Last month, Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl said he was “very worried” that attacks like the attempt to assassinate Slovak prime minister Robert Fico could happen in Ireland. He also raised concern that if “mob rule” was left unchecked, Ireland could be in a situation like Britain, where two MPs have been murdered in recent years.
There has also been similar intimidation at the home of Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman, in recent months, while People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy discovered graffiti near his home which read “Paul Murphy RIP".
