Irish man, 52, dies after incident off Portugal beach 

The incident happened at Inatel Beach in the Algarve near Albuferia. 

An Irish man has died after getting into difficulties while swimming in the sea off Portugal. 

It is understood that two locals had jumped in to help but had also gotten into difficulty at Inatel beach in the Algarve, near Albuferia. 

They were rescued by lifeguards after the alarm was raised, according to Portuguese officials. 

Emergency services went to the scene and maritime police discovered the Irish man, 52, was unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

The Portuguese maritime authority said resuscitation was attempted but the man was declared dead by a doctor at the scene.

His body was taken to a forensic science laboratory.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is "aware of the case and is providing consular assistance."
