Ruff day for Cocker Spaniel Charlie as dog rescued after 'unplanned dip'

An adventurous dog had its tail between its legs after being subjected to a rescue mission on Saturday.

The RNLI were tasked with rescuing Charlie, a three-year-old brown Cocker Spaniel, after the dog wandered down dangerously slippy harbour wall steps and tumbled into the sea to begin his unplanned dip while out with his walker.

He was rescued from a rocky ledge inside the west wall at Dún Laoghaire harbour by a volunteer crew.

The crew were alerted shortly after 2.30pm, and lifeboat Joval, helmed by Andrew Sykes, with volunteer crew members Laura Jackson and James Traynor onboard, arrived at the scene within six minutes of the call.

Although the water was calm and visibility was not an issue, the low sea temperature presented its own difficulties for the animal in the water.

Volunteer helm Andrew Sykes said Charlie was "distressed" but did not require any medical attention. 

"We were delighted to see the dog safe and well and reunite Charlie with his walker. 

"We would remind anyone walking their dog near the water’s edge to keep them on a lead to ensure not only the safety of the animal, but the owner as well," Andrew added.
