President Patrick Hillery, who had not attended the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, tried to avoid meeting her when they both attended the funeral of Princess Grace in Monaco the following year.

Newly released confidential files from the National Archives reveal that consideration was given to what Dr Hillery would do if he encountered Princess Diana at the ceremony.
