Man and teenager in stable condition after train strikes vehicle in Mayo 

A man and a teenager are in stable condition in hospital after a train struck a vehicle on a train line near Claremorris, Co Mayo, earlier this afternoon.

Gardaí and emergency services remain at the scene of the incident which happened shortly before 3:30pm. 

The vehicle and the Irish Rail, Dublin to Westport service collided at an unattended level crossing on a rural road at Garryredmond, Claremorris. 

A garda spokesperson said the adult male driver of the vehicle and the teenage male front-passenger have both been airlifted to Galway University Hospital where "their condition is stable." 

It is understood the two men injured are brothers, aged 20 and 16.

They are thought to be from Clifden, Co Galway, some 95kms away from the scene of the accident.

Gardaí, Mayo County Council Fire Serice, the National Ambulance Service with the assistance of Irish Coast Guard, Rescue 118 from Sligo and Irish Air Corp helicopter based at Baldonnel were involved in the intital response. 

Gardaí say they are currently liasing with the family of the occupants of the vehicle. 

"An Garda Síochána are also working with Irish Rail at present to facilitate passengers to continue their journey," the garda spokesperson added. 

"An Garda Síochána are investigating all of the circumstances of this road traffic incident.
