One further death as 429 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed

The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) has confirmed that there has been one further death related to Covid-19 in Ireland.

A further 429 cases of the virus have also been confirmed.

It brings to 4,873 the number of deaths related to Covid-19 in the country, while there has been a total of 246,633 confirmed cases.

Of today’s cases:

• 234 are men
• 182 are women 
• 78% are under 45 years of age 
• The median age is 29 years old

Nphet also confirmed that 174 Covid-19 patients are in hospital, with 45 being in ICUs around the country.

The new figures mean there have been six deaths related to the virus confirmed over the weekend after five were reported on Saturday.

461 cases of Covid-19 were also confirmed yesterday.

Meanwhile, 1,359,921 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland, as of April 23. 

Some 966,611 people have received their first dose, while 393,310 people have got their second jab.

HSE chief Paul Reid said that it has been a “strong week” for the vaccination programme with more than 170,000 doses administered.

He said that two days saw more than 40,000 vaccinations given.

Mr Reid confirmed that more than 220,000 people aged between 62 and 69 registered for their vaccine and more than 90,000 appointments have been made.

He added that 95% of the over 70s have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
