Gardaí are to boost patrols of street drinking spots in a bid to prevent a repeat of images from last weekend of crowds consuming alcohol outdoors in Dublin and Cork.

The announcement comes before a planned meeting on Friday between Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Taoiseach Micheál Martin, justice minister Helen McEntee, and health minister Stephen Donnelly.
