A man in his 60s has died after an accident involving a lawn-mower in Co Laois.

Named locally as Declan Doocey, he was fatally injured at Mountrath Golf Club around 9am yesterday morning.

He was brought to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where he was pronounced dead.

A report in Laois Today said the man was a volunteer at the club.

While golf clubs are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, maintenance workers are allowed to do their jobs.

Gardaí "attended the scene of a workplace accident at a leisure facility in the Mountrath area of Co Laois, at approximately 9am," a spokesperson said.

"A male in his 60s was injured during an incident involving a mower. He was brought to the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, where he was pronounced dead."

The Health and Safety Authority has been notified and will be carrying out an investigation.
