A public health expert has warned that a growing interest in collecting wild mushrooms may not be matched by a sufficient awareness among the public of the risk of poisoning from consuming such fungi.

Dr Douglas Hamilton, a specialist registrar in public health with the HSE Midlands, said an increase in the popularity of foraging for mushrooms constituted “a growing national population health threat”.
