It’s a stressful time when the Leaving Cert results come out, and all too often it seems a change of plan is needed. However, the fact that your first choice of course doesn’t now look likely, isn’t the end of the world.
Far from it. In fact, it often happens that you end up studying something that suits you far better. Take time to sit down and think about what you really want, where your obvious strengths lie, and where your weaker points are too — be honest with yourself.
Then look at the range of possibilities open to you. There are more than you would think.
Further education option
Cork Education & Training Board (ETB) is a driving force of education and training, providing the highest quality of services which are innovative, responsive and inclusive. Through Cork ETB, they are proud to say, there is a pathway for every learner.
Cork ETB is responsible for no fewer than eight Further Education Colleges, all located throughout the city and county — each of which provides a very comprehensive Post Leaving Certificate education service for people in its community.
The Cork College of Commerce on Morrison’s Island (the largest of its kind in Ireland), Colaiste Stiofain Naofa on Tramore Road, St John’s College on Sawmill Street, CityNorth College on Hollyhill, plus excellent Further Education colleges at Clonakilty, Kinsale, Mallow, and Macroom, are all centres of excellence.
Wherever you live, you will find a college of further education waiting to answer all your queries and guide you towards the right choice for your future.
Full-time or part-time, day or evening, you won’t believe the range of courses and qualifications on offer. And the staff are all firmly committed to putting the needs of their learners first, and guiding them on their way.
Why not make contact right away, and discover just how many pathways are opening up ahead?
The re-sitting option
If you didn’t do as well as you had hoped, but still have your heart set on high marks, then why not consider re-sitting the exam next year?
There are several private colleges offering Leaving Certificate courses, and your own determination will give you the impetus to try that bit harder second time round. These establishments work closely with students to improve their grades, and while it is undeniably hard work, the results are worth it. Bruce College, for example, has been offering repeat programmes for over three decades.
“The difference between us and regular secondary schools is that we tailor tuition programmes towards the student’s needs,” said Micheál Landers, college principal.
Intense course coverage, structured study, the ability to change subjects and improve potential, continual assessment and an environment focused on the Leaving Certificate along with a top class team of teachers and support staff can all make an immense difference to students second time around.
It’s the same at Hewitt College, where they maintain continuous assessment as a key part of their programme, and help every student to maximise his or her potential. “We can create a unique programme tailored to your strengths, interests and career options,” says principal Patricia McGrath.
If re-sitting the Leaving is something you are determined to do, then you will probably give it far more attention and hard work than you did this time round.
