O’Gara praises spot-on delivery from left of field

The former number 10 rarely hit the post — but he must have got a shock with what rebounded from the post here all the way to France.

This letter for Ronan O’Gara arrived to his house in France.
This letter for Ronan O’Gara arrived to his house in France.

O’Gara, now plying his trade with the Crusaders in New Zealand, still has a home in France thanks to his four years of coaching with Racing 92.

It was to that address that a letter arrived, simply addressed: “Mr Ronan O’Gara, Ireland No. 10, Cork.”

There is no doubt that the letter had been posted on these shores as, proudly emblazoned in the left corner along with the stamp, is an unmistakable Portlaoise sorting office stamp.

Ireland’s record points scorer took to Twitter to express his shock and delight at the expert delivery which,

despite the controversies of recent weeks, still shows that An Post knows how to deliver.

He added to the tweet: “Arrives to the house in France !!! #outstanding #thanks Mary Keneally #Ballyporeen.”

Within three hours of it being posted, the tweet had been liked more than 1,000 times.

One person added the comment: “This is why we need to keep our rural Post Offices in Ireland rather than closing them. Brilliant service.”

Another remarked: “Only in Ireland #WeOwnTheWorld #othersOnlyLeaseIt.”

However, one dared to suggest that the letter could have made it even further given the player’s worldwide fame.

“That’s pretty cool, imagine if it was posted to you as ROG, Ireland No 10, New Zealand!! Now that would be mighty impressive.”
