Irish Refugee Council calls on Government to allow asylum seekers to work

The Irish Refugee Council has called for asylum seekers to be allowed the right to work after spending six months in the country.

It is today proposing ways in which a Supreme Court ruling on the right to work might be implemented.

In May, the Supreme Court decided that Ireland's employment ban on asylum seekers was unconstitutional.

The Government has until November to respond.

Gabriel, an asylum seeker from Congo who has been living in Direct Provision for the last five years, says: "It's tiring now - over five years now I can feel even my body… I'm done.

"I'm really tired of this situation."
