RNLI issues advice on what to do when caught in rip currents

The RNLI is reminding anyone planning a trip to the coast this summer to be mindful of the potential dangers of the water.

It is particularly warning about hazardous rip currents that can quickly sweep bathers out to sea.

The advice comes as the volunteer crew yesterday requested to launch to Tullan Strand in Donegal.

Shane Smyth, a volunteer lifeboat press officer with Bundoran RNLI, said: "We'd just like to make sure that people are being safe in the water and respect the water.

"We would like to advise particularly about rip currents - they are very strong currents that run out to sea and even if you are really, really experienced in the water, you can get caught out with them.

"And if you get caught in a rip, the best advise we can give you is to stay calm and don't panic - swim parallel to the beach until you're free of the rip and raise you hand and shout loudly for help."
