A man is recovering in hospital after his van left the road and overturned into a field in west Clare this evening.

A man is recovering in hospital after his van left the road and overturned into a field in west Clare this evening, writes Patrick Flynn.

The single vehicle accident happened at around 7.30pm on the main Ennis to Miltown Malbay R474 road near The Hand.

It’s understood that workers on a nearby construction site heard the collision and rushed to the scene before raising the alarm.

They found the red van on its side in a field several feet below the level of the road.

Two units of the fire brigade and an ambulance from Ennistymon along with a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the scene.

On arrival at the scene, fire crews found one person still in the van. Fire personnel and paramedics worked together to safely remove the injured driver from the vehicle.

He was assessed and treated at the scene before being removed to hospital in Limerick.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the collision however it’s thought that the driver may have suffered a medical episode before the incident.
