Body of woman recovered from sea in Co Clare

A body has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare this evening, writes Patrick Flynn.

The alarm was raised at around 5pm when emergency services were alerted to a person in the water at the Cliffs of Moher.

The body was reported to be close to the shoreline at the base of the cliffs just south of O’Brien’s Tower. It’s understood the body was spotted by walkers on the popular cliff trail.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard launched one of their rescue boats and made their to the area while the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, was also sent to the scene.

A body, believed to be that of a woman, was soon located and recovered by Coast Guard volunteers shortly after 6pm

The body was taken back to the Coast Guard base at Doolin and removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will be carried out later.

Gardaí are working to identify the woman and establish how she came to be in the water.
