41% increase in students seeking counselling

Concerns being raised about an average six month waiting list for third level students to see a counsellor.

The Union of Students in Ireland says its members are waiting an average of 183 days.

It marks a 41% increase in students seeking counselling.

President of the USI Annie Hoey says its down to cuts to funding.

"Waiting lists and cuts to front-line services, counselling services are something that's become a little bit widespread.

"They are very often the services that are first on the chopping board and we would argue that those services are probably some of the most vital services to support students during their time at college."
