A man has been treated for arm and facial injuries after being attacked with a hatchet in Derry.

It happened shortly before 4am in the Chapel Road area on Thursday.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, aggravated burglary and common assault.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid, from the PSNI's reactive and organised crime unit, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed this incident, or who may have any information that could assist in our investigation, to contact detectives at Strand Road."
