Study shows how many hours we spend on social media every day

A study, carried out by Millward Brown on behalf of Liberty Insurance, has revealed the enormous amounts of time we spend on our gadgets each day.

Its results show that 22% of us spend between one and three hours on social media every day, this number increases to one in four amongst women compared to just one in five amongst men.

The numbers state almost everyone has a smartphone, 81%, and 59% have lost or damaged these valuable devices.

Also, a recent report by An Garda Siochana indicated almost €3m worth of mobile phones were stolen over the last 14 months, with most of those phones being smartphones.

Despite the high numbers of incidents regarding loss and damage, only one in 10 hold gadget insurance.

The study also showed that 64% of 17-29-year-olds feel panicked, desperate or sick if they leave their phones at home.

Commenting on the findings, broadcaster and television personality Eoghan McDermott said: “Smartphones have become an extension of our social lives and its where most social networking is done these days so these findings aren’t all that surprising.

“People use their smartphones for so much more than calls and texts these days and many people keep precious memories on them in the form of photos so it’s important they’re kept safe.”
