Sexual consent classes an option for new students at Trinity College

New students to Dublin's Trinity College will be given the option of receiving sexual consent classes from this autumn.

The pilot programme is being rolled out at the University's residences in a bid to help students make more informed choices.

A survey carried out at TCD in 2014 found that not all first years were able to define sexual consent.

Psychotherapist Trish Murphy is leading the course - she has said it is aimed at helping students avoid making mistakes they'll later regret: “That is exactly what we are trying to do is raise awareness, have conversations so that people are really conscious of it.

“So it is at the front of their consciousness before these things happen.

“So it is not afterwards and afterwards happens all the time and that is not fair on anybody.

“So the idea of this is to get everyone talking and talking enough so that it is pre this thing happening rather than post.”
