Dublin to consider banning election posters on public property

Dublin City Council is to vote tonight on a motion calling for the banning of election posters on public property.

The move would stop people from putting up posters on any properties owned by the country's largest Local Authority.

The motion has been proposed by Fine Gael Councillor Paddy Smyth who thinks a ban would help cut down on litter.

He also said that posters are a complete waste of time and money.

"Every election, people like me get to put up posters, let's say for myself, in Terenure, Rathgar, Ranelagh, Rathmines and Harold's Cross and pepper every single lamppost in the area, basically littering the place," he said.

"And the only thing that that communicates to the entire electorate is that my name is Paddy Smyth, and I have a head."
