New strategy promises greater monitoring of charities

Charities will be required to report their annual activities and finances to the Charities Regulator under the body's latest Strategic Statement.

Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, will launch the Statement for 2016 to 2018 today, together with the Chairperson of the Charities Regulatory Authority.

The Statement also provides for monitoring of charities and investigating any suspected non-compliance with the Charities Acts.

The body says it wants to create higher awareness about charities - by maintaining an up-to-date Charities Register and conducting usage satisfaction surveys of those working in the sector.

A spokesperson said that the statement has been prepared for a number of months and as such will not deal specifically with the recent revelations regarding Console.
