Ikea recalls safety gate after reports that faulty lock causes children to fall down stairs

Ikea is recalling a line of safety gates following reports of children falling down stairs after they opened unexpectedly.

The Swedish chain is urging anyone with a Patrull gate to stop using it immediately and return it for a full refund.

An investigation has shown the locking mechanism is not reliable, and poses a risk to small children. Some of the incidents where children have fallen have required medical attention.

In a notice on its website, Ikea said: "IKEA urges customers who have a Patrull safety gate to immediately stop using it and to bring it back to any IKEA store for a full refund."

The company added a third-party investigation had been carried out, which showed that the locking mechanism was not reliable, "despite approved tests to applicable standards".

Customers are asked to visit Ikea's returns department or call Customer Services on 015413302. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required.
