A van driver has died in a crash in Co Cork, after a collision with an ambulance carrying a patient.

A van driver has died in a crash in Co Cork, after a collision with an ambulance carrying a patient.

The vehicle collided with an ambulance at Ballygrogan Rathduff on the N20 Cork to Mallow Road in the early hours of this morning.

The van driver who died was in his mid-30s. His body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

Two paramedics and a patient had to be freed from the ambulance by fire crews as it had landed on its side.

The female driver of the ambulance, who is her early 40s, the male paramedic and the male patient, were all taken to Cork University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The road has been closed to allow a forensic examination of the scene and diversions are in place.
