Irish soldier chosen by head of United Nations to lead peace-keeping mission

The head of the United Nations has chosen an Irish soldier to lead its peace keeping mission in Lebanon.

Major General Michael Beary will have over 10,000 personnel from over 40 countries in his command.

Ireland last held the position of Force Commander UNIFIL in 1986 and the Major General's selection is being seen as an endorsement of the Irish Defence Force's commitment to the region.

Major General Beary previously served as head of the EU Training Mission in Somalia.
