The Government is committed to spreading broadband to every corner of the country according to the Minister with responsibility for Regional Development.

Heather Humphreys has defended her colleagues work on the issue saying - providing broadband for the entire country is akin to rural electrification.

She's has been responding to criticism of her new wide-ranging portfolio which covers, Arts, Gaeltacht, Regional Development and Rural affairs.

Minister Humphreys says she's committed to ensuring everyone has high speed internet access: "There are things that I can do. There’s €275m committed to rolling out the rural broadband. So that's going to be a huge amount of investment in rural Ireland.

"That itself will be a stimulus package. It's from the state and it will make it profitable for the private operators to provide broadband into every corner of the country."
