77 laptops, smartphones and computers stolen from HSE within five years

A number of laptops, smartphones and a desktop computer have been stolen from the HSE in a five-year period it has been revealed.

A total of 57 laptops and 19 smartphones and a desktop computer were reported stolen between 2011-2015.

Most of these devices are said to have contained sensitive data, however all but the desktop computer were protected with encrypted security.

Speaking to the Medical Independent , HSE Chief Information Officer Mr Richard Corbridge said: “IT security is a hugely challenging area, in health in particular. Ease of use to a clinician is uniquely important and yet the type of data at risk is of the highest regard.”

“We know that this is a crucial area for us to maintain high standards in and to ensure that we have the highest possible standards in this area.”
