Report: Motorway lights may be turned out to cut costs

A plan is being examined to turn off overhead lights on motorways earlier in the mornings to try and cut costs.

EU laws mean the energy efficiency of the lighting must be improved by 33% over the next five years.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland is looking at making the lights switch off earlier in the mornings and come on later at nights.

The Sunday Business Post reports that replacement LED lights are being examined which are cheaper to run, but would require initial outlay costs which should be offset over about ten years.
