Some schools will offer a new Leaving Certificate subject from September

A new Leaving Certificate subject will be taught from this September.

Around 40 schools will start offering Politics and Society as a subject, with the first exams to be sat in 2018.

Up to 115 schools expressed interest in offering the subject and around 40 will start teaching it from 2016, with Politics and Society coming fully on stream to all schools in two years' time.

The subject is one of the Department's 2016 commemorative projects, and Minister Jan O'Sullivan says she hopes it will inspire a new generation of social and political activists in Ireland.
