Social Democrats want to create 'an Irish NHS'

The Social Democrats have said they want to create 'an Irish NHS' with free health services available in local communities.

The party also wants to provide free school books and transport for every primary school pupil in Ireland.

The proposals are included in the party's general election manifesto to be launched this morning.

However the party has said it does not want to abolish the Universal Social Charge - and instead wants to help families by lowering the cost of services like childcare.

The party is led by Catherine Murphy, Roisin Shorthall and Stephen Donnelly.
