Publicans: Govt can make very simple change to allow pubs to open on Good Friday

Publicans say there is a clear consumer demand for pubs to remain open on Good Friday.

The Licensed Vintners Association and the Vintners Federation of Ireland are calling on the Government to end the traditional Good Friday ban on alcohol sales.

They claim the current law is out of date, and full of loopholes.

Donal O'Keeffe of the LVA says the law could be quickly and easily amended.

He said: "We’ve been talking to the Department of Justice and the Minister for many years about this issue, they are fully aware of our requests.

"We have had some advice to suggest it's a very straightforward amendment to licensing laws, not a complex adjustment at all. Where there's a will there's a way."
