Citizens convention 'only for show' says Pro-Life campaigners

Pro Life Campaigners have said a Citizens Convention on the issue of abortion is only for show.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has promised to convene a constitutional convention to debate the 8th Amendment, which provides the right to life of the unborn child.

But Pro Life groups claim the Government needs to take a step back from the issue - they also claim that pro-choice ministers such as Frances Fitzgerald and Paschal Donohoe, are out of touch with the electorate.

Deputy Chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign Cora Sherlock has said some politicians refuse to change their stance: “What we are seeing with the citizens convention is something of a conveyor belt, just a case of telling the people the Government is considering this matter, with some seriousness

“But we can see very clearly by comments made by Minister Fitzgerald that there is just one aim in mind.”
