President Higgins signs multiple bills into law

President Michael D Higgins has signed a number of bills into law, including one which allows for tougher jail sentences for burglars.

The Criminal Justice, Burglary of Dwellings Bill allows courts to refuse bail for offenders with previous burglary convictions.

Official figures show that 75% of burglaries are carried out by 25% of burglars.

Other legislation signed into law by President Higgins today includes the Dublin Docklands Development Authority Dissolution Bill, the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission Bill and the Health Insurance amendment bill.
