Burton calls for Wallace and Daly to have fines deducted from wages
The Tánaiste Joan Burton has said the fines issued to Mick Wallace and Clare Daly should have been deducted from their wages.
Burton said the imprisonment of both TDs could have been avoided if court fines were deducted from wages.
Both TDs were given Garda escorts from Dublin to Limerick Prison yesterday, only to be released within hours.
The Tánaiste added the events highlight some of the waste that is currently in the system.
“Both of the deputies obviously have significant incomes,” said Burton.
“It certainly means that, with the system of fines collection, you have a lot of Gardaí resources - which are needed elsewhere - and prison resources devoted to the two deputies.
“I think this could be just dealt with in a different way.”
