Update at 11.30pm: Gardaí have said the stand off on Mallow Street, Limerick, was a domestic incident.

Crews from Limerick City Fire and Rescue, together with Emergency Paramedics and Gardaí, including the Armed Regional Support Unit attended a stand off in Limerick city centre tonight.

A man with a knife had stood on the top of an apartment building on Mallow street near the city centre in a distressed state just before 8pm.

Gardaí sealed off the area for over two hours as they negotiated with the man before eventually he man came down from the roof about 9.45pm.

He has since been taken by ambulance to Limerick University Hospital. Access routes into Limerick city centre have just re-opened.
