Eddie Downey happy to have salary made public

The President of the Irish Farmers Association says he would be happy to have details of his own salary made public.

Earlier this evening at an emergency meeting of the Executive Council, it emerged that the former IFA General Secretary Pat Smith, was paid €445,000 in 2014 and €535,000 in 2013.

Mr Smith's pay was made up of €295,000 as basic salary, plus a €150,000 pension contribution.

Yesterday, Pat Smith stepped down yesterday amid the revelations, and outrage among IFA members over the scale of his salary.

Speaking to Newstalk, President of the IFA Eddie Downey, says it is not his decision whether or not his own pay is disclosed publicly.

"It's a whole new area for us let us see where it brings us, I don't have any difficulty with my own salary being printed personally, but I have to be guided by national council."
