A man has been airlifted to hospital in County Limerick following a workplace accident.

The man in his forties was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick following a serious workplace accident in Kilmallock at around 10.15am this morning.

Emergency services responded to a call shortly after 10am with one unit of Limerick County Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance and gardaí all attending the scene.

It is understood it happened at the construction site for a new primary school in Ashill.

Gardaí say a young man suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by air ambulance to University Hospital Limerick in Dooradoyle.

While the victim's injuries are described as serious it is understood they are not life-threatening.

The Health and Safety Authority have been notified and will carry out an investigation over the coming days.
