Transatlantic flight makes emergency landing at Shannon Airport

A transatlantic cargo flight has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport this afternoon.

United Parcel Service flight 213 was flying from the US to Germany at the time.

The crew declared an emergency at around 3.30pm reporting that they had to shut down one of the jet’s three engines.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 jet landed safely at Shannon shortly before 4.30pm and was met by airport emergency vehicles.

Units of the local authority fire service from Shannon Town, along with two HSE ambulances, responded to the incident.

Two addition units of the fire brigade from Ennis were placed on standby at a designated holding point adjacent to the M18 at Dromoland in case they were required.

It is understood there were six crew members on board the jet which was travelling from Louisville, Kentucky to Cologne.

The flight was about an hour west of Shannon when the crew declared an emergency.

Engineers are currently inspecting the affected engine.
