Patrick Troy and his son Finn spent Saturday night underground after they went caving in Pollnagollum in North Clare.
Despite being an experienced caver Patrick says he did not adhere to the basics and he got lost.
The alarm was raised after he failed to collect someone in Limerick.
Patrick told Anton Savage on Today FM that he made a rookie error.
He said: "I made some serious, cardinal mistakes. In caving you should always tell someone or leave a note as to where you are going and what time you are going to return.
"That was the one thing I didn't do, I just got it into my head that we'll be in and out of this in no time, I couldn't really see any difficulties in this.
"That was the cardinal mistake I made. We didn't bring food in because we thought that in two hours we'll be in and out."
