A man in his 40s is due to appear before Virginia District Court this evening following a fire at Monaghan Garda Station yesterday.

Shortly before 7pm last night, a car was driven into a secure parking area at the front of Monaghan Garda Station and set alight.

Firefighters put out the fire which caused significant smoke damage to the front of the building.

No one was injured and the man was arrested at the scene and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Carrickmacross Garda Station.

Monaghan Garda Station, which was closed following the incident, has reopened to the public.
