Pressure on Children's Minister to tackle staff shortages at Oberstown Detention Centre

The Children's Minister is coming under pressure to tackle staff shortages at Oberstown Detention Centre.

It is after a detainee and three staff members were hospitalised after an incident last night.

It is understood that one detainee attacked another, and the staff were injured when they intervened.

They have all been released from hospital since.

Sinn FĂ©in's CaoimhghĂn Ó CaolĂĄin says he fears the situation could have escalated at the Dublin facility.

"I believe the situation is very grave, I believe that it is absolutely essential that Minister James Reilly faces up to the fact that staffing levels, and training and supports for staff at Oberstown are not at an acceptable and safe level," said Mr Ó Caoláin.

"And I'm accordingly demanding that Minister Reilly act immediately and not await a tragedy."
