New record of 2.5 million vehicles on Irish roads

The total number of licensed vehicles here has passed two and a half million for the first time ever.

Department of Transport figures for 2014 show there were nearly 33,000 extra vehicles on our roads by the end of last year.

Ireland has over 1.9 million private cars - an increase of more than 1.7% on 2013.

There are now 2,515,322 cars on our roads, according to the figures. That includes:

• 1,943,868 private cars;

• 317,378 goods vehicles;

• 85,042 agricultural tractors;

• 36,573 motorcycles.

Diesel is more popular than petrol, with 48.52% of vehicles using petrol while 50.71% operate on diesel.
