Dublin teenager up for trial in Egypt

The Irish Government is facing criticism over how it has dealt with the case of Ibrahim Halawa.

The Dublin teenager's trial is due to take place in Eygpt this morning.

The 19-year-old was arrested in 2013 in Cairo at a time when protests were taking place in the city.

Authorities in Egypt have agreed to allow the chairperson of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee visit Ibrahim in the coming days.

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan is in the country and says more could be done to secure Ibrahim's release.

She said: "For any of us who have been working on the case, we are very frustrated with the Irish Government's actions, or lack of action.

"So I think it is deeply disappointing that here we are after almost two years after a minor has been detained.

"There are different legal angles that could be explored, and the Irish Government just don't seem to want to hear them."
