RSA head Liz O'Donnell calls for lower speed limit on rural Irish roads

The head of the Road Safety Authority Liz O'Donnell has said the speed limit on rural Irish roads is “way too high”.

O'Donnell has confirmed there have been 85 lives lost on our road so far this year - with five of those deaths last weekend alone.

Speed is still a common cause of many accidents and the Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has ordered a review of speed limits around the country.

O'Donnell also wants to see Donohoe follow through on plans to remove 80km per hour signs from rural lanes.

She said cuts to resources has made tackling incidents on the roads more frustrating - but that drivers need to take personal responsibility seriously when behind the wheel.
