Man jailed for Veronica Guerin murder to appeal conviction

A man jailed for the murder of Veronica Guerin has today applied to have his conviction declared a miscarriage of justice.

Brian Meehan from Crumlin in Dublin, is serving a life sentence following his conviction in July 1999 for the murder of the journalist in 1996, after a 31-day-trial before the non-jury Special Criminal Court.

The 47-year-old's application hinges on what his legal team claims is new evidence which emerged in the course of the 2001 Special Criminal Court trial of John Gilligan.

Mr Justice George Birmingham fixed November 19 and 20 for the hearing of Meehan's application.
