McGrath: We have to regulate Government 'twatters'

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has demanded legislation to "regulate twatters".

The Tipperary South TD criticised Health Minister Leo Varadkar and Junior Minister Aodhán O'Riordáin over their tweets to do with the free GP care for under 6's and the issue of abortion.

During the Order of Business, he called for the Taoiseach to use the Broadcasting Amendment Bill to reign in his ministers.

"There is an old adage there that, you know, if there's too many tweets, the person that tweeted becomes a twat," he said.

He continued: "Are we going to have Government by tweets? Minister for Health, Minister Aodhán O'Riordáin is tweeting about unsavoury issues, and insulting GPs," before being cut off by the Ceann Comhairle, who said he was out of order.

"We have to regulate these twatters," Deputy McGrath said later.
